Yesterday Facebook announced that they would be joining the likes of Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr and introduce hashtags. The rollout has begun already and will continue over the next few weeks.
Facebook have said that hashtags are the first in a series of new features to be released, such as trending hashtags and deeper insights. They indicated that the update was because “there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about.”
So, how will they work? When a user adds a post with a word or phrase using a hashtag such as #socialmedia it will become clickable. Then clicking on this word or phrase will direct you to a feed with other peoples posts that have used the same phrase. You will also be able to use the search bar to look up specific hashtags and click on hashtags that originate from other services such as Instagram.
Hashtags will comply with your individual privacy settings, so if posts are only set to be visible by friends they will remain only viewable by friends.
What we want to know is what do you think of this addition to Facebook – is it long overdue or unnecessary and irritating? Is it a feature you will use or one that you already use on other networks?
