‘A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.’
Selfie, the word of the year as named by the Oxford Dictionary of English this month when it was added to the listings (‘twerking’ was also added, but that is a craze that should be left to Miley Cyrus and her fans to blog about ;-)).
Not only is it the word of the year, but selfies are the social media craze of the year! The selfie was coined on Flickr in 2004 and has up-scaled from there and now there are social networking apps solely dedicated to the selfie culture such as ‘Snapchat’ and ‘Instagram’. ‘Instagram’ being its main origin: according to huffingtonpost.com, “As of October 2013, there have been nearly 40 million posts containing “#selfie” under their tags.” On top of this selfies are beginning to take over the world of Twitter and Facebook.
Now I bet you’re thinking, well, what does his have to do with my business. It has everything to do with it! Now, not only is it important just to update your status, dm, and chat to your followers and friends, but imaging is becoming an important aspect of networking with them too.
For example, if someone is to take a selfie with your product or using your service etc and then they were to post this on to their social networking site of choice and this gets ‘shared’, ‘RT-ed’ even a ‘like’ or a ‘favourite’ you could hit the big-time if it goes viral. Your business is being marketed without you even having to lift a finger…
Take BBC Radio 1 for instance, they are fantastic when it comes to the use of selfies. Everytime they have a guest on the show or a special feature taking place, the presenter posts a selfie on to the world of social media.
21 shares and 1,084 likes isn’t bad eh?! And that’s just Facebook!
Therefore the point being that it is incredibly important to latch on to any teenage social media fads as they can be crucial when it gets down to the ‘nitty gritty’ of this digital age in developing business communication, articulacy and creating history.
So, what have you got to lose?! Get down with the kids and give a selfie a try!
